Andhra Pradesh State Disaster Response and Fire Service Department has launched a refresher training program for its 150 staff in Anantapur district with a two-day session on fitness and swimming.

A two-day course involving 35 staff from Anantapur resort was trained in some special swimming techniques at Pandameru stream near Rapthadu by swimming expert Waheed. District Fire Officer V. Srinivasa Reddy said The Hindu that all 150 staff from the district’s six fire stations would be trained in these new techniques for navigating through water while carrying out rescue operations.

“Keeping fit is the mantra of effective fieldwork, so some improvised techniques were explained to the staff at the large office campus opposite the government general hospital using available truck tires and other equipment to improve people’s endurance,” he explained. . The two-day course which ended on Wednesday provided insight into how staff should remain nimble even when there was no work and also with the monsoon season in full swing, firefighters / fire department personnel must be prepared for any eventuality, he added.

These training programs would be conducted at all remaining stations for two days each.
