“I lost 23 kg during confinement thanks to bodybuilding and bodybuilding”

“The most important thing I learned from this trip is that with tracking macros, no foods are off limits.”

For Sydneysider, 34 Saliya Katungu Moran, a hectic social life led to difficulties in controlling his diet and weight, which affected his mental health. Wanting to get in better shape for her upcoming wedding, she started training with Ultimate Performance. After losing an incredible 23kg, she hace continued her training and continued to compete in powerlifting in which she broke personal bests and participated in a bodybuilding/bikini photo shoot, all despite challenges posed by lockdowns in Australia. It’s his story.

Before my transformation I used to travel a lot for work so my diet was all over the place. In most cases I would reach for convenience: I lived off airplane food, hotel room service, uber eats, and often attended dinner socials. Life was busy then and my health was certainly not my top priority.

When I was home (not traveling) we usually had takeout for dinner at least 4 nights out of 7 and I had a few alcoholic drinks most nights. Our favorite takeaways included Thai, burgers and Malay

My husband and I love weekend brunch and usually had brunch at a trendy Sydney spot on the weekends. In fact, we loved eating out so much that we reached a point where, when I was home, on certain days we ate out for breakfast, lunch, and dinner.

I have always exercised (cardio, running, cycling) and followed and stopped different diets in an effort to lose weight with limited success so far.

I love fashion so I dressed well and felt good about myself. Most people didn’t realize the extent of my weight gain over the 2 years as I got very creative with different outfits and knew how to dress my body to look good.

But 9 months before our next wedding, I decided that I wanted to “get into shape” before the big day.

I joined Ultimate Performance (UP) in Sydney in January 2020 after seeing a work colleague achieve an incredible transformation with them. I was right around the corner from my office so it was convenient for lunchtime workouts.

I started training with UP 3 times a week (3x full body split resistance workouts), these days we ripple my training throughout the year depending on the goal we are aiming for.

UP provided me with a meal plan and a guide to tracking macros. We have set ourselves the goal of losing 7kg initially before an upcoming hen weekend with friends in April 2020. Initially, my new diet was high in protein and very low in carbs. I ended up losing the 7 kg a week before the scheduled date. When we came back from hen weekend Sydney went into the first lockdown and I started training at home and continued to follow the macros. I maintained my weight during lockdown number 1 and when I got back to the gym in June 2020 that’s when I lost an extra 16kg before the wedding. After the wedding, I completed my first powerlifting competition and dropped an additional 4kg in lockout number 2 in preparation for a bodybuilding show.

I enjoy all foods now and one of the most important things this trip has taught me is that with tracking macros, no foods are off limits. Understanding the energy inside and outside and the composition of certain foods has been a real eye-opener. As my coach would say, knowledge is power!

For the most part, my diet is high protein and moderate fats and carbohydrates. Dinner will usually be a good source of protein (steak, chicken breast), moderate carbs, rice or spud lite, and vegetables. With occasional meals out or take-out taken into account. I now know how to manage social occasions/dining out while staying on track with my goals.

I have a big sweet tooth and love to get creative in the kitchen these days with overnight oatmeal recipes and all things biscoff. It has become a personal challenge to prepare delicious dishes that taste good and are “macro friendly”. I even created an Instagram page specifically for my fitness journey (@salinky_lifts) where I post recipes and ideas to help others. I’ve learned so much along the way and I feel passionate about sharing what I’ve learned with others.

I lost 23 kg with my initial transformation from January 2020 to October 2020 and I lost another 4 kg this year. My body fat percentage continued to drop:

From UP January 2020: PN: 91.9 kg BF: 28.4%

End of weight training Prep PC: 64.8kg BF: 12.5%

I always felt fabulous, but it wasn’t until I lost weight that I learned how much I loved my body and all it did for me. I am even happier and more confident in my skin than I have ever been. I’m wearing size 10 jeans for the first time in my life, which still amazes me!

My body is physically and mentally strong and I’m damn proud of what she’s accomplished!
