“The majority of people who lift clench their teeth with maximum intensity while doing it,” said Jeffrey S. Haddad, DDS of Michigan Center for ATM and Sleep Wellness.

He notes that it is not actually a fuzzy shape, but an intentional movement that can increase overall potency. “To research shows that tightening can actually help athletes gain more strength and power, ”he notes.

But clenching can take a toll on your teeth, as well as the muscles in your face, jaw, and neck.

“A mouthguard can help protect the teeth from all that force,” Haddad explains. “It can also help balance a person’s bite so that when they squeeze less damage can occur.”

“Just as the body can perform best when your hips are in the right position, the body also performs best when the jaw is in the right position,” he says.

The main downside to these guards is that they can cost you anywhere from $ 200 to $ 1,000 buckaroos, depending on your insurance plan. If this is beyond your budget, your dentist will offer you an over-the-counter option.
